Facebook AARP Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) Class Action Settlement

AARP users who watched videos on AARP.org while using Facebook between 2020–2025 may qualify for payments from a $12.5M privacy settlement.

Settlement Overview

This class action settlement (Markels et al. v. AARP, Case No. 4:22-CV-05499-YGR) arises from allegations that AARP improperly shared users’ video-viewing activity on AARP.org with Facebook (Meta) via tracking tools, in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA). AARP denies wrongdoing but has agreed to settle for $12.5 million. The Settlement Administrator, Simpluris, Inc., will manage the claims process. They are responsible for confirming eligibility, auditing submitted claims, and verifying required documentation (such as Facebook profile links and proof of AARP video access). Claimants may receive a Unique ID and PIN to file online, and if they did not receive these, the Administrator can issue them upon request. For verification, the Administrator may require additional proof like browsing history. Eligible class members who file valid claims will receive a pro-rata share of the net settlement fund, after deductions for attorney fees, court-approved costs, and administrator expenses. The administrator also handles distribution logistics, including issuing payments and managing tax withholding and reporting responsibilities. Class members who do not wish to participate can opt out or object by submitting a written request to the administrator by the opt-out/objection deadline. All objections and opt-outs are processed by Simpluris, Inc.
